This study examines the relationship between social media usage and academic performance among college students. Previous research has shown mixed results in this area. Some studies have found negative effects while others have found positive effects. Our research aims to contribute to this ongoing discussion by examining a large sample of students across multiple universities.

The relationship between social media engagement and academic outcomes remains contested, with meta-analyses yielding small and heterogeneous effect sizes (Liu et al., 2023; Marker et al., 2022). We argue that this inconsistency stems from a measurement problem: existing studies conflate passive consumption with active, discipline-relevant participation. Drawing on a stratified sample of 2,400 undergraduates across eight R1 institutions, we disaggregate social media use by modality and academic relevance. Our findings suggest that platform-specific engagement patterns — particularly participation in scholarly communities on Twitter/X — predict GPA variance that general usage metrics obscure.
