Trained versus prompted AI writing

Also called: prompted style, trained style

Prompted AI writing tells a model how you want to sound; trained AI writing supplies evidence of how you already sound, so the difference is between a description you author and a measurement of text you wrote.

A prompt is a hypothesis about your voice; a profile is data about it.

The distinction is not about fine-tuning weights. Both approaches usually run on the same stock model through the same context window. What differs is the provenance of the style information: self-report on one side, measurement on the other.

That matters because self-report is unreliable in a specific direction. People describe the voice they admire rather than the one they have, and they describe it in adjectives that thousands of other people would also choose. A measurement cannot flatter you, which is exactly why it is more useful.

Frequently asked questions

Do better models make trained profiles unnecessary?
No, and the relationship runs the other way. Model capability and conditioning on your data are separate layers. A model that follows nuanced instructions better also executes a detailed profile better, so improvements in the first layer raise the value of the second.
Does trained here mean fine-tuning?
Usually not. In consumer tools, trained refers to building a profile from your corpus and supplying it in context. Fine-tuning changes weights, is far more expensive, and is not how personal writing tools generally work.
Can I combine the two?
Yes, and it is the normal case. The profile sets the stable constraints; a per-task prompt carries the thing that changes, such as the audience or the deadline.
